The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 3.2 million new health care jobs by 2018 — more than any other industry.
This growth is being driven by the aging of the U.S. population and healthcare reform’s focus on electronic health records (EHR). With the increasing use of electronic health records, more health information management professionals will be needed to complete the new responsibilities associated with data management and their job responsibilities will continue to broaden. New technology including speech recognition editing, natural language processing and computer assisted coding are already having a significant impact on the daily lives of health information management professionals – including medical transcriptionists and medical billers and coders. As a result of these new developments in technology, we would suspect that by the time ICD-10 is implemented on October 1st, 2013 (which is mandated by HIPAA) that there will be more medical transcriptionists involved in the billing and coding process than coders involved in medical transcription.
